Without the ability to differentiate between essentials and non-essentials in life, your time management will fail. The dictionary defines essential as vitally important, necessary, and indispensable.

Classifying a non-essential as essential diverts critical resources — time, money, emotional capital, and attention — from necessary things like developing our children; maintaining our health; writing a book; creating meaning in life; changing the world; and leaving behind a legacy.

Keeping in view that something essential for someone may not be essential for someone else, please ask yourself if the following are essentials:

  1. Buying a new car.
  2. Owning a house.
  3. Summer vacations, winter vacation, spring vacations, fall vacations, and just vacations.
  4. Being rich.
  5. Leaving behind wealth for the children.
  6. Setting up an additional factory or industry.
  7. Some of our hobbies.
  8. Becoming a member of the Rotary Club, Lions‘ Club, and the Cub‘s Club.
  9. Making new clothes at Eid, at marriages, etc.
  10. Taking citizenship of a western country, Turkey, Malaysia, etc.
  11. To take a second wife.
  12. To take a third wife.
  13. To take a fourth wife.
  14. To send kids to study abroad.
  15. To have all the kids graduate from college with a high GPA.
  16. To be famous.
  17. To have all the world respect you.
