Without the ability to differentiate between essentials and non-essentials in life, your time management will fail. The dictionary defines essential as vitally important, necessary, and indispensable.
Classifying a non-essential as essential diverts critical resources — time, money, emotional capital, and attention — from necessary things like developing our children; maintaining our health; writing a book; creating meaning in life; changing the world; and leaving behind a legacy.
Keeping in view that something essential for someone may not be essential for someone else, please ask yourself if the following are essentials:
- Buying a new car.
- Owning a house.
- Summer vacations, winter vacation, spring vacations, fall vacations, and just vacations.
- Being rich.
- Leaving behind wealth for the children.
- Setting up an additional factory or industry.
- Some of our hobbies.
- Becoming a member of the Rotary Club, Lions‘ Club, and the Cub‘s Club.
- Making new clothes at Eid, at marriages, etc.
- Taking citizenship of a western country, Turkey, Malaysia, etc.
- To take a second wife.
- To take a third wife.
- To take a fourth wife.
- To send kids to study abroad.
- To have all the kids graduate from college with a high GPA.
- To be famous.
- To have all the world respect you.
